The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
